THE 4 Cs

Let’s start with Colour. Generally speaking, diamonds range in appearance from colourless – the most prestigious – to very light yellow. In jewellery, the colour F on the scale defined by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is usually used, but if you are looking for a top-of-the-range diamond, you can opt for a D.

Another element to consider is Clarity, i.e. the amount of inclusions present in the stone. These are imperfections often invisible to the naked eye and recognisable using a 10-magnification lens. The standard uses SI (Small Inclusions) diamonds, meaning the inclusions are so small that the beauty of the diamond is not affected. The complete absence of inclusions is indicated by the IF (Internally Flawless) symbol, which accompanies diamonds aimed at the most discerning customers.

The Carat of a diamond refers to its weight, which is not to be confused with its size. The unit of measurement is the carat, which corresponds to 0.2 grams.

Finally, the quality of the Cutis also important. Transforming a rough stone into a faceted gemstone that can best reflect light is a very delicate operation. The symbol EX (Excellent) indicates the highest cutting quality, followed by VG (Very Good) and G (Good).

How to read a gemological certificate

All Conte Diamonds jewellery is accompanied by a gemological certificate from our in-house laboratory.
Customers may also choose diamonds certified by international gemological institutes (GIA, IGI or HRD).
The certificate of a diamond or gemstone indicates not only the 4 Cs as described above (Colour, Clarity, Carat and Cut), but also a range of information that identifies a gemstone and defines its quality. Specifically:

  • Stone – the main stone of the jewel, for example diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire etc.
  • Shape - round, pear, oval, marquise etc…
  • Weight – expressed in carats.
  • Color - description of the color.
  • Finish grade - determined by the experience of the cutter.
  • Report number – the unique number of the jewel certificate.
  • Comments – any comments and annotations also of the secondary stones present on the jewel.
